Alentejo: Portugal beyond the familiar routes

Portugal holds few secrets these days. Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve are established favourites for city trips, holidays and corporate travel. Alentejo lies almost literally next door, yet feels like a different Portugal.

While travelling into Alentejo, you immediately notice how much the landscape changes. Less development, more open space. Cork oaks, vineyards, whitewashed villages and long roads through a region that feels much quieter than Portugal’s classic destinations.

Lisbon as the gateway, Alentejo as the destination

The journey takes us via Lisbon. Yet in no time at all, we find ourselves in a region that feels remarkably far removed from the bustle of the city. That first stretch does not have to feel like lost time. When a destination covers a larger area, it pays to look at transfers a little differently. After all, an incentive does not only begin when everyone checks into the hotel.

A transfer can, for example, partly take place on the water. On a catamaran, as we did. Lunch or an aperitif on board, the Portuguese landscape all around, and that first transfer immediately becomes a deliberate transition between arrival and destination.

That is how we like to look at a trip at way2events: which moments are necessary, and which of them can we make more interesting without artificially filling the programme?

A landscape that helps shape the programme

Alentejo does not have one iconic attraction around which the entire incentive needs to be built. Or perhaps it does, because wherever you drive in Alentejo, you see cork oaks. They are such a natural part of the landscape that a visit to a cork producer genuinely makes sense here. You see where the material comes from, how it is processed and why cork is so closely connected to this region.

The same applies to wine. Alentejo has many wine estates, which offers plenty of possibilities. Of course, you can taste the wines, but it becomes more interesting when you give the experience a little more time. Walk through the vineyards, get to know the local wines and then have lunch together at the estate. No rush to move on immediately. Just stay where it feels right. That suits this region.

Following in the footsteps of De Mol in Alentejo

We also recognised a number of places and landscapes from De Mol. The programme had previously travelled to Alentejo and, once you drive through the region yourself, you immediately understand why.

The area is very photogenic, but above all highly varied. A small village, a wine estate, an endless road, a completely remote location: the setting changes very quickly without ever feeling as though you are moving from one attraction to the next.

For an incentive, that creates many possibilities. You can build in activities that genuinely suit the location, without everything having to be famous or touristy. We often find that more interesting than a programme built exclusively around the best-known addresses.

Not everything that is good belongs in the programme

Alentejo is large. You only really notice that once you start mapping out a programme. A combination may look perfectly feasible on a map. In reality, quite a lot of time can be spent travelling between the hotel, restaurant, wine estate and activities.

That requires selection. Which locations do we combine on the same day? Where does the group stay overnight? When is a transfer functional, and when does it start slowing down the programme? Can we add something along the way so that a necessary journey gains meaning of its own?

For way2events, an important part of the preparation lies precisely there: combining the right places so that the trip works as a whole. A special hotel is only interesting if its location fits with what is planned for the following day. The map and the programme have to be considered together.

Not everything needs to be filled

Alentejo naturally gives an incentive a different character. There is less distraction from a large city and less pressure to keep seeing something new. The programme can breathe.

That does not mean very little happens. It simply means that everything does not have to follow immediately one after another. Lunch can run a little longer. You can stay somewhere longer when it feels right. And if the group simply wants some time with nothing planned, that works just as well here.

That may sound obvious, but incentive programmes quickly become packed. Because there is so much you can do. Because you want to show people something. Because you worry that otherwise it might feel like too little. In Alentejo, that is not necessary. The surroundings already do a lot by themselves. That makes it much easier to choose what you do and do not include.

Organising an incentive in Alentejo

For a group that likes Portugal but does not want to return to Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve, Alentejo is a particularly interesting option. You fly into Lisbon, reach a completely different environment relatively quickly and can then build the programme in many different ways.

What the trip looks like therefore depends on the group. For one incentive, the emphasis may be on gastronomy and wine; for another, there may be more room for adventure or activities. A combination with Lisbon can work perfectly too. way2events builds the programme around those choices: flights, accommodation, transport, restaurants, wine estates, activities and on-site support.

Because Alentejo has plenty to offer.
You just do not have to try to do everything at once.

Dare to be bold.
