Albania is still not the first destination that comes to mind for many people when they think of an incentive trip. And that is precisely what makes it interesting: there is still something to discover.
For this trip, we stayed in Durrës on the Adriatic coast, with Tirana and Central Albania within easy reach. That resulted in an incentive where different sides of the country followed each other in quick succession: the sea and promenade of Durrës, local gastronomy, historical sites and the much more urban rhythm of Tirana.
For a group that does not want to return to a destination where everyone can more or less predict the programme in advance, an incentive in Albania has a clear advantage.
Durrës as a base for discovering different sides of Albania
Durrës lies on the Adriatic Sea and is one of Albania’s oldest cities. Alongside its beaches and long promenade, the city also carries traces of a history stretching back thousands of years.
For this trip, its location was particularly interesting. From Durrës, we could build different programmes without having to move the group to a new hotel every time. On one day, the group stayed close to the coast; on another, the programme took us towards Tirana or further inland.
That kept the trip practical and manageable while the surroundings continued to change. A lunch overlooking the sea simply feels very different from an evening in the Albanian capital. That contrast allowed us to bring different rhythms into the same incentive.
A destination without a predefined set of expectations
Barcelona, Rome, Lisbon: great cities, but no longer unfamiliar territory for many experienced travellers. Albania is in a different position.
For many participants, the discovery only starts once they arrive. That gives an incentive a dynamic that is difficult to recreate in a destination everyone already has a clear picture of.
Part of the appeal of this trip was simply seeing what would appear around the next corner. Albania is also difficult to capture in a single image. The coast feels Mediterranean, while the landscape changes quickly as you travel inland. Modern hotels and new developments sit alongside places that tell a very different story. Tirana, in turn, feels completely different from Durrës.
As an organiser, there is no reason to smooth out those differences. They are part of what makes the destination interesting.
From lunch on the Adriatic coast to an evening in Tirana
The relatively short distance between Durrës and Tirana creates plenty of possibilities when building an incentive programme in Albania.
A day can deliberately start at a slower pace on the coast, with time by the sea or lunch featuring local specialities. Durrës itself also offers enough historical context to discover another side of the destination.
Tirana then brings a distinct change of pace. The capital is colourful, busier and noticeably energetic. Squares, restaurants, rooftop bars and neighbourhoods such as Blloku give the city its own rhythm. That makes it easy to move from a daytime visit into dinner and an evening programme.
There is no need to choose between staying by the sea and experiencing the city. From Durrës, both can form part of the same trip. For participants, that means a few days in Albania never feel like a repetition of the same setting.
Not more programme, but better combinations
An unfamiliar destination can quickly tempt you to show too much. At way2events, we deliberately avoid that.
You can move a group through as many places as possible in a few days, but that does not automatically make the trip better. The sequence of locations, restaurants and activities ultimately matters much more.
For this incentive, the strength was therefore in the combination. Durrës brought the relaxed atmosphere of the coast. Tirana added energy and an urban dimension. Local gastronomy became a natural part of the programme at different moments, while the location made it possible to add activities or cultural discoveries without overcomplicating the journey.
That created variety without keeping participants constantly on the move simply because the schedule demanded it. A good programme shows people a destination, but also gives them time to simply be there.
What participants do not need to see
Travelling through a relatively unfamiliar destination requires a considerable amount of practical preparation. Which flight works with the programme timing? How should airport transfers be organised? Which journeys are realistic within one day? Which restaurants can accommodate a group? How much margin is needed between an activity in Durrës and an evening programme in Tirana?
Participants should not need to spend time thinking about these questions during the incentive. For us, however, they are decisive. A transfer that takes twenty minutes longer than expected can affect a reservation later in the day. A schedule that looks perfectly filled on paper can turn out to be exhausting on site if travelling times have not been properly considered.
That is why we do not look at an incentive as a collection of separate reservations, but as one continuous programme. Flights, hotel, transport, restaurants and activities need to support one another in practical terms. Only then does the trip feel as though it simply runs the way it should.
Albania for companies looking to show something new
Interest in Albania has grown considerably in recent years, yet for many corporate groups it is still far from an obvious incentive destination. That makes this an interesting time to go.
You do not have to travel to the other side of the world to take participants out of their familiar environment. Durrës and Tirana are relatively close, while the contrast with a classic Western European city break is significant enough to give the trip a completely different character.
At the same time, the destination offers enough comfort for professional group travel without losing the sense of discovery entirely. That is becoming increasingly rare. For companies that want to take employees, clients or business partners somewhere that still prompts questions before departure, that is a valuable quality.
An incentive to Durrës or Tirana
This trip mainly confirmed for us how many possibilities emerge when Durrës and Tirana are not treated as separate destinations.
The coastal city offers a comfortable base and a slower rhythm. Tirana is close enough to provide a completely different programme. Between the two lies a country that remains largely unfamiliar to many participants. The right format depends on why the group is travelling, how many days are available and who is taking part. Based on that context, way2events develops an incentive to Albania further, selecting the right accommodation, transfers, restaurants, activities and on-site support.
There is no need to sell Albania as the new version of somewhere else.
What makes it interesting is that many people still have to discover for themselves what they think of it.
