5 weird places for a disorientating trip

When you’re planning a trip, the place of destination is probably one the most important factors. But not every destination is as straight- forward as is it seems! In these five ‘weird places’, for example, you’re never sure in exactly which country you are… So don’t forget to pack your passport, you’ll need it!

1. Baarle- Hertog/ -Nassau

The small community ‘Baarle’ (only 7,5 km2 large) exists of two separate parts. That’s not very weird, except that those two parts are owned by different countries. Baarle- Hertog is a Belgian exclave in Holland, while in some instances, Baarle- Nassau is an enclave in Baarle, which is officially Belgian!

2. Cooch Behar

It’s a jigsaw puzzle of no less than 106 Indian exclaves in Bangladesh, countered by 92 Bengal exclaves in India. According to the legend, the enclaves were used as stakes in chess games between two local Maharajas.

3. Campione D’Italia

In the 1930s, Campione was considered a prestige project for Benito Mussolini, who added the ‘D’Italia’ suffix. Later on, it was even used by the Americans in the invasion of Italy during World War II! As a remainder of that, the residents enjoy both Swiss and Italian community benefits, while gambling laws are less strict here than in either Switzerland or Italy! So that explains the huge Campione Casino…

4. Caribbean Netherlands/ Dutch Caribbean

We all know where the Netherlands are: in the heart of Europe. At least, that’s where 97,65% % of the Netherlands are… The other 2,35% of the Dutch Kingdom’s area is in the Caribbean Sea, on the other side of the world! Most of us know about Aruba, Curaçao and Sint-Maarten, but have you ever heard of Bonaire, Sint-Eustasius and Saba?

5. Puerto Rico

The American flag has 50 stars, which represents the 50 states of the USA. Fourty- eight of them are linked together on the mainland, plus Alaska and Hawaii. And that’s it, right? Wrong. There are 15 more islands under control of the USA, called ‘territories of the United States’. Puerto Rico is the largest of these territories, with almost 4 million inhabitants!
