Yerevan: A First Meeting, an Old Stadium, and a Result That Needed a Second Leg
Some ties are decided by the football alone. This one was decided by 51 seconds either side of the hour mark, in a stadium that had been hosting big nights in Armenian football since long before either club existed in its current form. For Shamrock Rovers, it was uncharted territory in every sense — the club's first-ever competitive meeting with Armenian opposition, and a travelling party that, once again, wasn't just the matchday squad.
Getting the Squad There in Shape

A schedule that leaves players undernourished, or eating unfamiliar food the night before kickoff, shows up on the pitch by the hour mark. In Yerevan, that risk was managed rather than left to chance — familiar, properly timed meals for the squad, built around training and recovery rather than around whatever the hotel happened to be serving that day, with the kitchen briefed well in advance on exactly what the group needed and when. The training pitch itself had to be booked, confirmed and timed around the club's own session windows, so there was no last-minute scramble to find somewhere for the squad to work before a match this important.
A Tight Result That Needed a Second Leg
Ararat-Armenia's home support filled every gap Rovers tried to create inside the historic Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium. Sandro Lima broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, and Zidane Banjaqui doubled the lead with eleven to go, sending Rovers back to Dublin 2–0 down. A week later at Tallaght, Rovers won 2–1 on the night, but it wasn't enough — Ararat-Armenia went through 3–2 on aggregate.
Not the Full Story: A Trip That Delivered What It Needed To
A tough exit from the Champions League path, but not a wasted trip. Rovers tested themselves against a genuinely useful side, and the operation around them - transfers, meals, training access, timing - did exactly what it needed to do at altitude, in a country the club had never travelled to before, even when the scoreline didn't go their way.
