Some away nights are mostly about the football. Malta was about more than that: the heat that lingered well after sunset, an island fully embracing a Champions League night, and a Rovers travelling party that included more than players and staff.
Supporters were travelling too, with everyone sharing the same 180-seat charter from Dublin to Malta.
Arriving in Malta: One Plane, One Purpose

That meant no connecting flights or separate arrival times. The whole group landed together, with coaches ready to take them on from the airport.
For many of those stepping off the plane, the Maltese heat was an immediate contrast with the weather they had left behind in Dublin that morning.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two clubs, and bringing such a large travelling party onto a relatively small island required careful planning. Keeping everyone together from departure onwards made the operation considerably easier on arrival and gave both the club and its supporters a clear structure for the trip.
Two Groups, One Operation
The players and supporters were travelling together, but their schedules were very different.
The squad followed a tightly planned programme between hotel, training, recovery and meals. Training schedules had to take the Maltese heat into account, while catering was organised around the needs of the players.
The supporters had their own programme.
Their transfers to Ta’ Qali had to match the stadium’s away-supporter procedures, tickets needed to be arranged in advance, and everyone needed clear information on where to be and when.
Both groups were part of the same operation, but neither could be allowed to interfere with the other. That required careful coordination throughout the trip.
1–0, Then 2–0: A Tough Night on the Pitch
Rovers matched their hosts for long spells before Robert Muric put Floriana ahead in first-half stoppage time.
Just after the hour, Matt Healy received a second yellow card, leaving Rovers with ten men. Mustapha Jah added a second goal in the 79th minute as Floriana secured a 2–0 victory in front of a vocal home crowd.
Behind the Scenes: Keeping the Operation Moving
After a 2–0 defeat, played with ten men in temperatures around 30 degrees, the travelling party had enough to deal with without transport becoming another issue.
The return transfers ran as planned. The group moved out of the stadium without unnecessary delays or confusion, and everyone got back to the hotel according to schedule.
The result may have changed the mood of the evening. It did not change the operation around it.
One Leg Down, Not the Tie
A 2–0 first-leg defeat left Rovers with work to do, but the tie was not over.
They left Malta knowing exactly what awaited them in Dublin, accompanied by the players, staff and supporters who had travelled together for the first leg.
One charter had brought the entire travelling party to Malta.
