LNZ Cherkasy arrived in Ghent at the end of a European campaign unlike most.
Their first-ever run in Europe had already taken them far beyond Ukraine, including a “home” leg played on foreign soil. For the return against Gent, the club travelled to Belgium with a party of around sixty people and a programme that would keep changing right up until departure.
For way2events, this was a different kind of assignment. No team to send abroad this time. The job was to receive one.
Arriving in Ghent: Building the Right Base
The Courtyard hotel became LNZ Cherkasy’s base for three nights.
Rooms were allocated according to the needs of the travelling party: twins for the squad, singles for staff, a junior suite for the coach and a suite for the club president. Separate spaces were prepared for kit, massage and team meetings.
That was the fixed part.
The arrivals were less predictable.
One member of the technical staff arrived a day earlier than scheduled and needed an additional room and transfer. A federation guest flew into Brussels and required separate accommodation there. Another traveller was rerouted through Charleroi at short notice.
Each change meant adapting hotel arrangements and transport without disturbing the rest of the programme.
By the time the full group was in Ghent, everyone was where they needed to be.
Meals, Training and Recovery
The team stayed on full board throughout the trip, with meals organised around training and matchday requirements.
The schedule included dinner on MD-2, lunches and dinners during the following days and the usual pre-match catering. Additional requests came in along the way, including a pre-training snack and sandwiches shortly before the game.
Those were added without changing the rest of the programme.
The squad also had gym sessions on two separate days, while the recovery room remained stocked with water and ice.
None of it was complicated in isolation. The challenge was making sure every part remained aligned as timings and requests changed.
Moving Around Ghent
Transport was built around a 50-seat team bus, kit van and Sprinter.
Together they covered airport arrivals, hotel transfers, training sessions, gym visits, matchday movements and the final airport departure.
Additional transfers were added whenever the schedule shifted.
A Brussels–Ghent transfer remained available on standby. Early airport runs were arranged when departure times changed. Individual transfers were added for passengers arriving through different airports.
The transport plan was there to provide structure, not to become a constraint.
0–0, Then Penalties
On the pitch, LNZ Cherkasy came remarkably close to extending their first European campaign.
After another goalless 90 minutes, the tie went into extra time. Gent still could not find a way through, meaning two complete matches had passed without LNZ conceding from open play.
The decision eventually came from the penalty spot.
Gent won the shootout 4–2 and progressed, bringing LNZ Cherkasy’s European debut to an end in the narrowest possible way.
Keeping the Focus Where It Belongs
LNZ Cherkasy’s stay in Ghent involved more changes than the original planning suggested.
Arrival times moved. Airports changed. Extra rooms were needed. Transfers were added. Catering requests came in late.
None of those changes needed to become the team’s problem.
That was the assignment for way2events: provide a reliable base, keep the programme moving and adjust whenever reality stopped following the schedule.
For a club completing its first European campaign a long way from home, that mattered.
They could concentrate on the match.
