Some matches carry weight before a ball is even kicked. This one did — not because of what was at stake on the pitch, but because of where it had to be played at all. LNZ Cherkasy, playing their first-ever European tie in the club's history, couldn't host it in Cherkasy. The war meant their "home" leg had to be staged on neutral ground, at the Stadion Kazimierz Górski in Płock, Poland — a country, a stadium, and a crowd that belonged to neither side.
Building a Trip Around a Venue That Belonged to No One
A neutral-ground fixture strips away every shortcut a travelling party would normally lean on - no relationship with the home club's staff, no familiar routes between hotel and stadium, no existing accreditation channels already open. way2events built the entire operation for Gent from scratch around a stadium that had never hosted either side: transfers timed tightly around training and recovery, no gaps for the squad to stand around in the Polish summer heat, and meals built around what the players actually needed before a European night rather than around whatever happened to be on a hotel buffet. Every element that a normal away trip inherits from the away side's familiarity with the ground had to be planned in instead - pitch access, timings with the stadium authority, and a hotel base chosen for its proximity to Kazimierz Górski rather than for any connection to the tie itself.
A Shorter Turnaround, No Room for Slack
Neutral-venue ties also compress the calendar - less time to scout, confirm and lock in logistics than a normal away leg allows. On a trip with this many moving parts already, and this little margin for error, the travel and catering weren't going to be one more thing for the squad to manage. Everything was set before the group left Ghent, so matchday itself was simply a matter of executing a plan rather than improvising one.
Goalless in Płock, Settled on Penalties in Ghent
Gent had the better of the chances in Płock - eleven shots, plenty of the ball - but LNZ's defence held for a 0–0 draw. It stayed goalless back at the Ghelamco Arena too, through ninety minutes and extra time, before Gent won 4–2 on penalties to end LNZ Cherkasy's historic European run.
