With the publication of his novel Yevgeny Onegin, Alexander Pushkin gifted Russian literature a monument in 1830: a social satire of a society consumed by boredom, but equally a model of melodramatic rapture. 50 years later, Tchaikovsky reworked it into "lyrical scenes". There, the music serves entirely the expression of the characters' feelings, while the orchestra provides unity with obsessive themes of great subtlety. Following his recent forays into the Russian repertoire, Alain Altinoglu now brings his interpretation of this score, which is characteristically 'lyrical truth'.
